If you’re wondering how to choose a crystal, perhaps for anxiety, stress, confidence, spiritual growth or simply because you’d like to start working with crystals, you’ve probably discovered there is a lot of conflicting advice. One book recommends one crystal, another crystal expert author suggests something different. Some people tell you to trust your intuition, while others believe a crystal chooses you.
As a qualified Advanced Crystal Practitioner, with hands on experience as a Crystal Healing Therapist and Teacher, one of the questions I’m asked most often at my Crystal Workshops is:
“How do I know which crystal is right for me?”
Another common question is:
“I’ve been told a crystal chooses you. Is that true?”
Perhaps you’ve been given a crystal as a thoughtful gift by a friend or family member. That’s a lovely gesture, but how do they know it’s the crystal that’s right for you at this particular moment in your life? The truth is there isn’t just one way to choose a crystal. Below are my six favourite methods.
1. Research Your Crystal
Many people begin by looking in a crystal book to find a crystal associated with what they need help with, whether that’s anxiety, stress, confidence, better sleep, spiritual growth or support for a particular chakra. Books are an excellent place to start, but remember they are only a guide.
For example, both Rose Quartz and Malachite are associated with the Heart Chakra. Rose Quartz has a gentle, nurturing energy, whereas Malachite has a much stronger energy. One person may naturally connect with Rose Quartz, while another feels drawn towards Malachite instead. The crystal that’s right for someone else may not necessarily be the right crystal for you.
2. Trust Your Intuition in Choosing a Crystal
Sometimes you simply know. You may walk into a crystal shop and immediately feel drawn towards one particular crystal without understanding why. Learning to trust your intuition is one of the most rewarding ways of choosing a crystal.
3. The Crystal Doesn’t Want to Leave Your Hand
Have you ever picked up a crystal and found yourself reluctant to put it back down? Or, perhaps you’ve reached into a bowl of crystals and one seems to almost ‘stick’ to your hand. Sometimes it’s the crystal that keeps drawing your attention that deserves a closer look. Equally, there may be times when none of the crystals feel right. That’s perfectly okay too.
4. How to Choose a Crystal Using a Pendulum
- Hold the pendulum by its chain and allow it to become still.
- Begin by asking a question that you already know the answer to, such as, ‘Is my name (add your name)?’ Notice the direction the pendulum moves. This becomes your ‘yes’ response.
- Next ask a question that has an obvious ‘no’ answer, such as, ‘Is my name (add a name that isn’t yours)?’ The movement now becomes your ‘no’ response.
- If your pendulum doesn’t respond well, try holding it in your other hand or use a different crystal pendulum.
- Once you’ve established your yes and no responses, you can ask questions such as, ‘Would this crystal be suitable for me?’
5. How to Choose a Crystal Using Finger Dowsing
- Make a circle by touching your thumb and first finger together on one hand. With your other hand, make another circle and link the two together.
- Start by asking a question with a known answer, such as, ‘Is my name (add your name)?’ Notice whether your fingers stay together or pull apart.
- Next ask a question with an obvious ‘no’ answer, such as, ‘Is my name (add a name that isn’t yours)?’
- Everyone’s body responds differently. Discover how your own body responds before using finger dowsing to choose a crystal. Once you know your yes and no response you can ask your questions which can only be answered with yes or no. Questions could include: ” Is this a good crystal for me?” “Is this a helpful crystal to help calm me?”
6. How to Choose a Crystal Using Arm Dowsing
You need someone to help you with the method, such as friend or maybe the retail owner selling the crystals
- Hold the crystal in the hand you don’t normally write with and place it over your thymus gland in the centre of your chest.
- Extend your writing arm out to one side.
- Ask your helper to say, ‘Is this crystal suitable for (add your name)?’ while gently pressing down on your outstretched arm.
- If your arm remains strong, it generally represents a ‘yes’. If your arm weakens easily, it usually represents a ‘no’.
A Crystal Lesson I’ll Never Forget
Many years ago, I was choosing between two similar crystals online. One was cheaper than the other. Although I felt guided towards the more expensive crystal, I ignored my intuition and chose the cheaper one instead. When the crystal arrived, I cleansed it and began holding it.
As a psychic, I sometimes receive images and impressions. As I looked into the crystal, I clearly saw the face of a young Asian boy. I saw an image of him digging crystals out of the ground surrounded by much older male workers. He looked sad, as though forced to do it. In that moment, I realised I wasn’t simply buying a crystal. I was also buying its journey and the energy of everyone who had been involved in bringing it to me.
I immediately sent prayers to the young boy and to others working within the crystal industry. It was a valuable lesson that has stayed with me ever since. Since that day, I have always trusted my intuition when choosing a crystal.
Does The Price or Size of a Crystal Matter?
People often assume that the biggest crystal must be the most powerful or that the most expensive crystal must be the best. In my experience, that’s not always true. Some of the smallest crystals have an incredible energy and seem very keen to work with you. Likewise, the right crystal isn’t always the cheapest or the most expensive.
As a Crystal Healing Therapist and Crystal Workshop Teacher, the best advice I can offer is choose the crystal that feels right for you as you are inviting their energy into your life. The most best crystal for you can only be as good as how you look after it, especially if you are doing to be using it or having it with you on a regular basis. Discover in my blog section how to cleanse and also how to charge your crystals to keep their energy vibrant.
