Life has a way of placing layers around us. We become somebody’s employee, manager, partner, parent or carer. We learn how we are expected to behave in different situations. We adapt to fit in, meet our responsibilities and avoid upsetting the people around us. Over time, we can lose touch with the things that once made us feel most like ourselves.
As you practise Reiki and begin to let go of some of the stress, expectations and emotional weight you have been carrying, you may find yourself returning to something you enjoyed before life became so complicated.
You might return to horse riding, begin playing music again or rediscover a style of clothing you once loved. You may become the adult version of the person you were before life’s barriers and the pressure to conform began to shape your choices.
Alternatively, you might discover a completely new interest or style. Becoming more yourself does not necessarily mean returning to the past. It can also mean giving yourself permission to explore who you are now.
When Your Interests Begin to Change
Students sometimes tell me that things they once enjoyed no longer have the same appeal. Big nights out at the weekend may be replaced by relaxed lunches with friends. Their taste in music might change. They may become interested in different activities or begin to question habits they previously followed without thinking.
Reiki does not tell you what music to enjoy, what to wear or how to spend your weekend. These changes may happen because you are becoming more aware of how different people, places and experiences make you feel. Something that once suited you may no longer feel right, while something new begins to appeal.
You May Want to Spend Time With Different People
As people change, they sometimes find that they want to spend time with different people too. Certain conversations or social situations may no longer feel as comfortable. You might find yourself drawn towards people with whom you can be more relaxed, honest and completely yourself.
This does not mean believing that you are better or more spiritual than the people already in your life. It does not mean that everyone who changes must leave old friendships behind. It may simply mean that you are becoming more conscious of the energy you experience around different people and the effect it has on you.
Some relationships will grow with you. Others may naturally become less important as your interests, boundaries and priorities change.
Your Work Can Change With You
The same changes can be reflected in your work. As you become clearer about who you are, you may communicate with greater confidence and begin presenting your work in a way that feels more natural.
You may stop trying to appeal to everybody. Instead, you begin attracting colleagues and/or customers who connect with your personality, values and way of working. There is an old saying that like attracts like. We are all energy, and the energy we bring to our relationships and work can influence how we communicate and who feels drawn towards us.
From over the decade of teaching Reiki and seeing private clients for Reiki, I have found as people let go and often started listening to their inner guidance more, changes can occur naturally. Some start to really do well at work where they previously may have struggled, or were about to quit. Their colleagues start commenting how much happier they appear.
After Reiki healing sessions or practising Reiki regularly on themselves, some are suddenly surprised by the negative atmosphere at work, that they never noticed before. For others who now are feeling more confident, a job they felt content in now becomes too constrictive and they want a promotion or alternative employment.
If you are in business, you may find some clients leave or just seem to be less contented and new types of clients enter. This does not mean sitting back and expecting Reiki to magically deliver customers. A business still requires practical action. However, when your actions are aligned with who you genuinely are, the right customers may find it easier to recognise that you are the right person for them.
Letting Go Creates Space
Letting go is not about rejecting your former self or deciding that everything in your life must change .It is about noticing what you are carrying that you no longer need.
Old expectations, outdated roles, other people’s opinions and past experiences can consume more of our energy than we realise. When some of that emotional weight is released, it creates space for the people, experiences and opportunities we genuinely want.
You do not need to force the next version of yourself into existence. You may simply need to release some of the things that have been covering up the person who was there all along.
Taking on Too Much Responsibility Can Be Selfish
Sometimes, by being less giving and saying no to people you are allowing them to gain knowledge and experience. To grow as individuals.
I remember one client, who was a new manager, was about to quit her job due to high stress, anxiety and was on antidepressants.
The soothing Reiki had helped let go of unwanted old emotions and supported self-care and healing. It gave them time to reframe the role of a manager. They also now had boundaries that were flexible to non existent before due to trauma and the need to be liked.
After Reiki treatments with myself, the client’s stress reduced considerable and with it, the anxiety. Confidence increased and boundaries became stronger. The client delegated more to staff which meant more time for hobbies and to invest in a relationship. Over time, feeling felt more like their “old self” and no longer needed the antidepressants ( in consultation with a medical professional.
The client took another promotion with a large increased salary and far more responsibility. They were now starting to get a bit concerned that they were lazy! In fact, they had simply learnt the art of delegating. Rather than hoarding the work, they shared it and allowed their staff to learn.
Treading the Path with Lighter Footprints
Reiki does not decide who you should become. It can help you recognise what feels right for you and what you are ready to release.
You may rediscover an old passion, explore something completely new, change the people you spend time with or begin attracting different customers into your business. You might also realise that some parts of your life already reflect exactly who you are.
The transformation is found in feeling clearer, lighter and more comfortable with yourself.
As you let go of what you no longer need, the true you can shine more brightly and you can begin to tread the path of life with lighter footprints.
